387 Hines TerraceThe historic home of the month for April is 387 Hines Terrace. It is the home to Ed and Lenore Sell and their cat, Jesse.

This unique Mediterranean Style home was built in 1921. The home was built for Kinloch Falconer Dunlop who was a local roofing contractor. The home remained in Mr. Dunlop’s possession for ten years. The Dunlop family lost the home in 1932, during the Great Depression. Several families have lived in this house prior to the Sells purchase of this home.

One family in particular lived in this home for approximately 50 years. This beautiful house was home to the Turpin family. The Turpin’s horticultural contributions are still evident in the garden located to the rear of the home. The garden is the size of 2 ½ lots. Due to the Turpin’s passion for camellias, this garden is home to more than 30 assorted camellias.

387 Hines TerraceBoth Ed and Lenore enjoy working in the garden and tending to the maintenance of plantings from the Turpin family and of their own. Other garden favorites are the nandinas and bluebells.

The home’s original exterior architectural style had not changed much when the Sells acquired the home 10 years ago. The most visible change has been the choice of exterior paint color. A trip to Italy inspired the Sells to select a warm color, reminiscent of the colors found within the Tuscan countryside.

In recent years, the Sells have renovated two bathrooms and the kitchen. The Sell’s home has been host to a Vineville Ladies Night Out and a Vineville Oktoberfest. The house has been featured in a Hay House Moonlight Tour of Homes and Gardens. IN 1993 the house was the Decorator Showhouse.

Recently, the large oak tree that was part of the front yard landscape was lost when high winds caused the tree to fall, missing the house. The house was spared, but the tree was lost. When asked what she likes most about living in the Vineville Historic District, Lenore replied it is the diversity of the neighborhood. It is the diversity of the architectural styles and the diversity of multi-generations that call the Vineville area home.
