345 Hines Terrace

345 Hines TerraceThe historic home of the month for June is 345 Hines Terrace. It is the home of Clay, Gail and Jacob Morton and their cat Vandy.

This charming stucco cottage was built in approximately 1928. Not much is known about the original owner or contractor who built the home. A den and master bedroom were added to the house in 1957 which doubled the square footage from 1000 to 2000. The front door was acquired from an old church. Several decades passed and the house declined to a state of disrepair when it was purchased in the 1980's by Andy Greenway.

Andy Greenway grew up in Macon. His parents live on Elizabeth Place off of Hines Terrace. His mother, a realtor, was walking in the neighborhood when she saw a moving van. The woman who had been living in the house had passed away and her heirs were loading up her furniture. Andy's mother began talking with them and quickly worked out a deal to purchase the deceased woman's washer and dryer. She eventually inquired what they were going to do with the house. After some quick negotiating, Andy's mother wrote a sales contract on the spot. A recent college graduate, Andy moved into the house shortly thereafter. It quickly became a "party house" and many former fraternity brothers had their engagement parties there.

The woman who had passed away was diabetic and had lost her eyesight; as a result the house fell into less than desirable condition. Once Andy took possession of the house he began the project of removing wallpaper, which was not an easy task, as previous owners had repapered every few years. Andy had to scrape away six to seven layers of wallpaper in each room. Andy also stripped the woodwork and interior doors to bare wood. Central heating and air were installed during this time.

Subsequent owners included Jay Dell, an attorney from Atlanta, who added a large master bath and Lynn Bell who contributed beautiful landscaping and interior painting.

345 Hines TerraceThe Mortons have continued to maintain and introduce a variety of garden plants into their landscape. Some of Gail's favorite plants are knock-out roses, hydrangeas, azaleas, and Indian hawthorns.

The Mortons have resided in this lovely home since May of 2006. Clay is Assistant Professor of English at Macon State College; Gail is Coordinator of the Health Resource Center and Library at the Medical Center of Central Georgia. Jacob will start kindergarten at a local school this fall.

When asked what attracted them to the house they call home, the Mortons responded that it was the charm of the Vineville Neighborhood.
