135 Hines Terrace

135 Hines TerraceThe historic home of the month for September is 135 Hines Terrace. It is the home of Dr .Billy and Patty Oliver. Dr Oliver is the President of Wesley Glen Ministries. He has 43 years experience as a United Methodist Minister. Mrs. Oliver is a retired school teacher. As a young girl, Patty would walk past this house on her way to classes at Clisby School. Years later she would come to own this house and call it home.

The first recorded deed dates to the year of 1911 with L. A. Sheperd as the owner. The home was originally built as a two story white wood frame house. The next owner was W. E. Davidson as listed in 1915. The home received significant fire damage in 1920 and was rebuilt with a brick exterior veneer. The home features a wrought iron balustrade on the roof over the front entrance.

From 1950 to 1971 this house was home to Dr. J. Hook Spratling. During the next two decades several owners are listed. Bob and Essie Herndon purchased the home during the mid nineties. The Herndons sold the home to the Olivers in 2001 and the Olivers began a one year renovation of the property. Daly Smith was the original architect for this renovation. The design and construction of the renovation was a successful collaboration of the Olivers and Don Weiche Construction. The Olivers are quick to give credit to Daly and Don for the excellent services they provided with regard to architectural details, space planning and construction.

Most notable of the renovations is an open stairway located in the foyer and two large niches that flank the living room fireplace and provide shelving for collectibles. The crossheads over the foyer entrance to living and dining rooms feature a centered paterae design. Chair rails were increased in width to a larger scale. The ceiling heights on the first floor are 12 feet. Three matching chandeliers are located in the foyer, dining and living rooms. Ceiling medallions accent the ceilings. A corner cabinet located in the kitchen is original to the house.

Home of the Month September 2008 - Vineville Neighborhood AssociationA first floor bedroom features a fireplace mantle rescued from the Wesleyan College fire. This fireplace is especially sentimental to Patty as she is a graduate of Wesleyan. Second floor renovations include a new bathroom, bedroom and study. During the renovation, the entire house was rewired. This was accomplished by removing all the interior plaster from the walls, rewiring and then reapplying plaster.

Patty Oliver, with the help of her friend Charlene Baxley has created beautiful interiors that are well appointed with antique furnishings and accessories. The antiques were inherited from their family or purchased by the Oliver’s.

On special occasions the home is the gathering place for the Oliver’s two daughters, two sons in law, two granddaughters, and two grandsons. Another granddaughter will be born this fall.

The late Dewey Maxwell and Wimberly Treadwell assisted with the landscape design. Paul William’s maintenance of the exterior lawns and gardens has earned him the reputation of Master Gardner. Large gardenias, azaleas and hydrangeas are strategically planted as a compliment to Patty’s English Garden.

The Oliver’s renovation took a year to complete and they feel it was successful due to the expertise of Don Weiche. The Oliver’s home is a reflection of their attention to the architectural details that will be enjoyed for years to come.
