The Vineville Neighborhood Association is an active organization open to all residents of the Vineville Historic District and to anyone interested in the preservation of the area as an economic and social asset of Macon. Founded in 1978, the VNA was responsible for collecting the necessary data on neighborhood homes for consideration as an historic district by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s National Register of Historic Places. The neighborhood achieved this status in 1980.

Our association covers an area that stretches roughly from the Georgia Academy for the Blind on Vineville Avenue to I-75 and from the Midtown Kroger on Pio Nono Avenue to Ingleside Avenue. Elected board members reside in and represent all areas of the neighborhood. Committee volunteers dedicate time, interest, and effort into outreach and social activities.
Currently, the VNA has several objectives:

-To welcome new residents to the neighborhood and make them feel included
-To protect the integrity of the neighborhood and ensure it is a safe and wonderful place to live
-To host social activities to allow neighbors to get to know each other and build a sense of community
-To publish a bimonthly newsletter to inform members about current neighborhood issues, initiatives, and upcoming events
-To promote the Vineville Historic District area as a special place to live in Macon

We’re more than an organization, we're a family. New members are embraced by the organization, invited to parties and gatherings, allowing them to feel a part of the community. Friendships are forged, business alliances are built, and lasting benefits are reaped by all. New residents are supplied with welcome packets and information about the historic community into which they have moved.

We're a great group for parties and get-togethers. We meet numerous times throughout the year at barbecues, pool parties, holiday gatherings, and more. We also work together to ensure the neighborhood and its surroundings are properly represented in local politics and key initiatives. We strive to ensure education, safety, and that neighborhood preservation is upheld and constantly improved.

Holiday Party

The VNA Annual Holiday Party was held on Friday, December 18, 2009 this past year and was organized as a progressive event. The party kicked off at 163 Rogers Avenue with the main dish, followed afterwards by desserts and music at 192 Rogers. Members were asked to bring an appetizer, side dish or dessert to share, while VNA provided the main dish and beverages. Thanks to Lars and Annette Anderson, Susan Griffin and Paul McClellan for opening up their homes for this adults only event.

A festive Holiday Party is organized and hosted each December at one of the association member's homes. VNA furnishes all meat and beverages, while members are asked to please bring an appetizer, side dish or dessert to share. Everyone is encouraged to come enjoy the festivities and bring a new neighbor with you if you can. Please note: This is an event you should schedule a babysitter for in order to attend.

Oktoberfest Party

Oktoberfest was celebrated on Sat. Oct. 24, 2009 this year from 7-10 pm at 163 Rogers Ave., home of Lars and Annette Anderson. This was an event the whole family could enjoy! Kids welcome.

Each Fall an Oktoberfest party is organized and hosted at the home of one of the association members. For the past several years VNA has been fortunate to have Lars and Annette Anderson host this wonderful event.

Beverages and bratwurst are provided by VNA, while members are asked to bring an appetizer, side dish or dessert to share. This party has become an Autumn classic and is thoroughly enjoyed by all who attend. Polka dancing is not required, but may be contagious. This is a child and family friendly gathering.

Spring Fling Party

The annual Spring Fling event this year was held on St. Patrick's Day Party, Saturday, March 14, 2009 from 6:30 until at 192 Rogers Avenue, the home of Susan Griffin and Paul McClelland.

VNA provided beverages and corned beef. VNA members and guests brought side dishes to share. St. Paddy's is not complete without music, so if you play an instrument, bring it; we'll have a little live music just like in the pubs of Ireland.

Please plan for a babysitter for this adults only event.

A Spring Fling Party is organized and hosted in March, April or May of each year at one of the association member's homes. VNA furnishes all meat and beverages, while members are asked to please bring an appetizer, side dish or dessert to share. Members are encouraged to come enjoy the festivities and bring a new neighbor with you if you can. Please plan for a baby-sitter for this event and come have some fun!

Neighborhood Cleanup

Ladies Night Out

Every other month, the women of VNA host a relaxed, fun get together to see old friends, meet new friends and enjoy good company. Each year Santa makes a stop at the Vineville Historic District to visit with the friendly families and children of the neighborhood and enjoy the charm and comfort of one of the beautiful neighborhood homes.

Yard Sale

Each year members of the Vineville Neighborhood Association collectively donate and host a neighborhood yard sale as a fundraiser for the association. This is a wonderful way to share those items no longer needed in your household, put them to good use for others, and find good deals for yourself on furniture, clothes, office equipment, books, household goods, and collectibles.

This year's yard sale was held on Saturday, June 6, 2009 from 8am – 11am at the home of Lars and Annette Anderson at 163 Rogers Avenue.

Please be thinking ahead about items you can donate for next year's 2010 yard sale, to be held in the spring, to support the association.

The Macon-Bibb County Planning and Zoning Commission provides Design Guidelines for Historic Districts in Macon-Bibb County. Being aware of and following the guidelines and regulations when making renovations to your property will help maintain the architectural heritage of the structures in our district.

Easter Egg Hunt

Bring the children out for neighborhood fun with the Easter bunny. Open to children of all ages, VNA will provide the Easter Egg Hunt complete with refreshments!

Each Spring an Easter Egg Hunt with a visit from the Easter Bunny is planned and organized within the neighborhood to permit children and families an opportunity to celebrate this fun tradition. The younger children have their own area to search ensuring opportunities for all to be successful, while the trail blazing older children are provided a much larger berth to roam and collect.

2595 Ingleside Avenue

The March Home of the Month is 2595 Ingleside Avenue. It is the home of Dawson (Don) and Emily (Toots) Mims. The home is located at the intersection of Pierce Avenue and Ingleside. The retired couple has passionately landscaped and maintained the grounds of their residence and the home next door, which they own as well.

When the nineteenth century turned to the twentieth, Pierce Avenue was an established Vineville street, with homes scattered along both sides. It is believed that the original home was purchased by the Young family in 1898 from the Cherry family, who had owned a plantation at this location. Over the next fifteen years the Young family increased by nine children. It was during this 15 year period that the house caught fire in 1905. After the fire, a new home was rebuilt at the site.

Ida Young Walker, who was one of the nine children, contributed an article entitled "A Bit of History," which was previously published in the 1980’s April issue of the Vineville Neighborhood Gazette. A few of her family recollections were noted in this article. She provided fond memories of riding horses and ponies in a neighbor’s pasture, walking to Vineville School with her friends, wading in a nearby stream and driving her brother’s pet goat in a wagon through the Hines Terrace wood. She also reminisced about her mother driving her horse (Una), when she went calling in the afternoons.

Eventually, Ida’s father felt "...the neighbors had gotten to close." He liked wide open spaces and Vineville was becoming too developed. So, he bought the Ellis Howard home place on old Ellis Howard Road, which is now Wesleyan Drive, and moved the family to what was then truly “country”. Dr. H.H. Johnson later bought this property and lived there for many years.

The Dunlap family, with sons, Kinloch and Billy lived in the 2595 Ingleside Avenue house, for a few years. Eventually the home was sold to the Oliphant family. The G.F. Oliphants owned this property from 1947 to 1978, a period of 31 years. It was during this period that Jeanette Oliphant, who served as President of the Butler Garden Club and also President of the Vineville Garden Club, began the designing and landscaping the home. Many of Jeanette’s original plantings are still part of the landscape.

Donald W. and June A. Bower purchased the property in 1978 and lived here until 1982. Remington and Ramona Rose Crossley called it home from 1982 to 1987. The home was then purchased from Remington and Ramona by Don and Toots Mims in May of 1987. The have lived at the 2595 Ingleside home for nearly 22 years.

The home is a reflection of Don and Toot’s individual and combined passions. Toots is an avid collector of antique covered vegetable dishes, porcelain plates and other assorted china pieces. Her creativity prompted her to convert an old dental cabinet into a chest, purposed to display flatware. One of Don’s hobbies is woodworking. He has created several display cabinets for collectables and has made a plate rail in the kitchen.

Don and Toots have cared for the furniture and heirlooms that have been handed down through the generations on both sides of the family. When visiting their home, I was impressed by the condition and quality of their family pieces. The union of their family heirlooms is symbolic of the deeply rooted bonds that exist between both sides of their family. The two families have known each other for over 100 years, owing to the grand fathers of Don and Toots who had neighboring farms.

Mrs. Mims is active with the Thornwood Garden Club, where she is Club Treasurer. Both Don and Toots share responsibilities relating to the planning, planting new plants and maintaining the yards that were part of the original landscape of previous owner Jeanette Oliphant.

A tour of their gardens will reveal a wide array of plants. Some of the noteworthy plants include the Confederate Rose, which is a hearty hibiscus with blooms that look like pink crepe paper, the native azaleas transplanted from their farm to their home, three thousand narcissus bulbs planted by Don and Toots, and Flowering quince and hydrangeas that were planted by Mrs. Oliphant.

Don and Toots have created gardens that provide pleasure and inspiration to them and to others.

Communications (Christy Joynt) – Assists with various aspects of preparing and mailing the bimonthly Historic Vineville Gazette newsletter. Help is needed from writing articles to putting on labels.

Home of the Month (Bryan Conley and Jim Weldon) – Selects a monthly home to feature in the newsletter and on the web site based on the appearance of the house and yard. Takes photos and write articles about the monthly selection.

Membership (Nancy Van Etten) — Maintains the VNA membership database and all aspects of membership from collection of dues to identifying new residents and preparing and distributintg welcome packets to new neighbors.

Neighborhood Cleanup (Kim Zachman) – Plans and implements a cleanup in a different area of Vineville the first Saturday of each month. Publicizes the cleanup in the newsletter and on the web site. Creates and distributes a flyer to residents in the area where the cleanup will be held to encourage their participation and to solicit new VNA memberships.

Properties (Ron Lemon) – Monitors the Macon-Bibb County Planning and Zoning Commission and Historic Design Review Board hearings so that any items of concern to the Vineville Neighborhood are addressed. Also handles issues such as property code violations and safety issues.

Social (Susan Griffin) – Plans and implements social events throughout the year. Help also is needed to take photos of events for the newsletter and the web site and to create and handle the printing and mailing of postcards to VNA members about events.

Technology/Web Site (Neil McArthur) - Maintains the VNA web site.

Yard Sale (Paula Haralson & Leslie Willingham) – Plans and implements the VNA’s main fundraiser for the year. Help is needed to help pick up yard sale items, get donations of new items from Ingleside Avenue merchants, handle publicity, price items, lineup volunteers to work the day of the sale, handle refreshments for sale at yard sale and for volunteers and to pick up and return tables for the yard sale.

Home of the Month February 2009

312 Hines Terrace

The Home of the Month for February is 312 Hines Terrace. It is home to Holly Ertel, who purchased the house in November 1996. This home was one of the homes featured on the Macon Gardens, Mansions & Moonlight Tour, May of 2005.

This single story cottage was purchased by J.B. Neighbors and his wife Jeanne Jones of Savannah, Georgia, in September 1920, from Aline Tharp. It was in this house they raised four children. Joseph Britton Jr., Daniel, Anne and Jean. J.B. (Joseph Britton) Neighbors, Sr. was a County Commissioner for Bibb County and Jeanne was a home maker. Their pet Pinto pony, Betsy was stabled in the backyard garage.

J.B. Neighbors also owned the vacant lot next to the house and it was the neighborhood playground for a variety of games and sports activities. There was a friendly rivalry between the Buford Place teams and the Hines Terrace teams.

J.B. Neighbors and his oldest son J.B. Jr. hand built a one room log cabin on the vacant lot. The log cabin was built to be a fun place for the family to enjoy. The cabin still stands.

Eventually the vacant lot was sold and a new home was moved to this site. The lot upon which the house was built was originally owned by Sandra Walker who sold the lot to Aline Tharp in February 1911. It is assumed Aline built the home between the years of 1911 to 1920.

The Neighbors family would reside at this home from 1920 to 1984, A period of sixty four years. There were five different owners from 1985 to 1996. During the decades the Neighbors family lived at 312, several remodeling projects were completed. An addition to the rear of the house provided another bedroom and a family room. One major improvement for all the Hines Terrace residents was the paving of the street in 1934.

This cottage has been the home of Holly Ertel since 1996. Prior to purchasing this property Holly lived on Pinecrest Road in the Ingleside Neighborhood for 26 years.Holly has made several well planned improvements to the interior and the exterior of her home. The remodel of one bathroom created a spacious master bath for the master bedroom. A remodel of a rear hallway created a second full bath. Both of the bathrooms feature 36” high base cabinets with marble countertops. Ceramic tiles are arranged as to provide unique designs in the bath and shower areas. A Rinnai waterless water heater provides a constant supply of hot water.

Other interior improvements include new wood laminate flooring for the kitchen and den. Holly also used her talent for space planning and organization to design a new pantry for foods and serving pieces. A new stack washer and dryer require less space than conventional models and provide additional storage in the kitchen.

The exterior improvements are a result of excellent planning and placement of plantings and architectural features. The old backyard garage (Betsy’s former residence) has been replaced with a new two car garage built in 2004 complete with storage space and an outside water connection for potting projects. Cobble stones define the walkways. A beautiful stone wall defines Holly’s backyard from that of her neighbors. The climbing rose bush, similar to the Cherokee rose accents the stone wall while providing beautiful blooms in April and May.

With the help of designer Matthew W. Floyd, Holly has made dramatic changes to the gardens of her cottage. Flower beds were created that feature a full year cycle of flowers including camellias blooming in the winter and bulbs, annuals and perennials in the spring and summer. To the rear of the backyard is a porch swing that hangs underneath an arbor of evergreen clematis and tangerine crossvine. Holly’s well planned landscape design for the backyard includes hollies, boxwoods, camellias, azaleas, rosemary and other herbs. Seasonal plantings of pansies compliment the back and front yards. Established plants such as the borders of liriope, the red leaf maple and hearty ferns provide curb appeal that showcase Holly’s home for all to enjoy each season.
